The Struggle for the future of Nigeria; 'Thinking needs to change'

Ordinary people need to wise up to what is happening if we want to change the way things are.

"Our Politicians would only move beyond gestures once there is a critical mass of informed citizens"-Professor Sir Paul Collier; The Bottom Billion; Why The Poorest Countries Are failing and What Can Be Done About It.(Postscript), Oxford University Press.

Fifty-Eight years after independence, Nigeria is still struggling with the challenges of inclusiveness and growth, a sad legacy of prolonged military incursion into domestic politics. Till date the country is struggling to deal with the challenges of  'Corruption, Political Instability, Poor Resource Management' , Poverty, Sycophancy, gross underdevelopment, etc.

The emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari  in 2015 was seen as a solution. Young People ignorant of his past records were manipulated by entrenched interests to help him win the 2015 elections, however his poor performance due to his personality and the pseudo political system which he wants to uphold has ignited nationwide call for restructuring, and regime change.

The truth is that by rejecting the restructuring of the country despite campaign promises, the leadership remains a greater part of the country's problem not the solution. The future recognises the need for restructuring for greater development and sustainability, but the leadership is yet to see anything wrong with the structure.

Only the restructuring of the present political system will change the way things are, let us not be fooled .
The present structure is stifling growth and we are focusing on what wouldn't work. It's not the right system, it's very unfair and works for just few people- the elites, their families,  friends and associates.

The oil blocks are still in the hands of few people , the government has monopoly of the wealth of the country-the oil sector, whatever they tell us is what we believe.  The local government areas are hijacked by the same politicians and their thugs, appointing their families and friends as care-takers, stifling development at the local level.

I learnt the national assembly has approved the autonomy of the LGA's. This is a good step, only if the politicians will allow ordinary people to make success of it. More needs to be done to restructure the entire system if we truly mean well for the future.

Unless we do the needful, restructure the country to create more opportunities for many, there will not be much difference in the future.

  1. And Change Did Not Come': The Sad Reality Of Nigeria's Subverted Democracy- Uche Okeke . Visit www.theleadprojectfoundation.com. Our collective problem was the military who saw post conflict Nigeria as their spoils of war. However events now require restructuring which is inevitable. President Buhari is a victim of both his personality and military political structure a sad legacy which he is trying to uphold. Young people who are victims of manipulation by entrenched interests are beginning to experience the reality. The truth is that the leadership remains a larger part of the country's problems not the solution. Only the restructuring of the country will change the way things are.
