Nigeria's Illusive Democracy

"While we look at the screens of our televisions and mobile phones, others with agendas have their fingers in the pockets of our democracy, on the steering wheel of our democracy, on the keys to our democracy, on the credit cards of our democracy"-Professor A.C. Grayling.

Citizens embrace democracy with reasonable expectations that it will deliver a better quality of life. However, when it fails to deliver these benefits, people lose faith in democracy. The truth is in Nigeria, people are deprived of a voice in the government of their lives so its hard to describe what is happening in Nigeria as a workable democracy. 

According to Professor A.C. Grayling; "the idea of democracy is that it is a political order in which government is chosen and given authority by the periodically, freely and fairly cast votes of the enfranchised members of the populace, who have a real choice as to whom to give their vote. A set of civil liberties is essential to the operation of democracy, such as freedom of expression, the right to assembly, and liberty in respect of political choices. 

The mechanisms by which the government is thereafter constrained in what it can do, are highly important" He concluded that three further intimately connected essentials-'the proper operation of the democracy, the quality of the electorate, and the quality of the elected' would close the gap between aspiration and nearest thing to the ideal that humanity can achieve in this sphere. Thus, "it is in the breakdown of these further essentials that the crisis of contemporary democracy consists". 

 My first attempt to investigate democracy crisis in Nigeria which i described as 'bribe and bullet' endorsed above explanations without any iota of doubt. Failing democracy in Nigeria is as a result of the great disconnect among the three essentials-the political system, the political actors and the people-'capture, corruption, coercion'. My focus will be a brief explanation of what has transpired from the return to civil rule in 1999 till date and what can be done to reclaim democracy in Nigeria and make it achieve its purpose of liberty and freedom as in the words of Professor A.C.Grayling; "worked out by some of the best minds in the history of our civilization"(P.11). 

*The Dubious Political System: Writing on NewYork Times; 'Lessons From Nigeria's Militarized Democratic Experiment' on October 9 2019, Professor Wole Soyinka has this to say about Nigeria's Political system ; "Nigeria's current Constitution, a parting gift from the military that ruled the nation for nearly four decades after its independence from Britain in 1960, was released to the public on May 29, 1999. The document was significant in one respect: Other than the conscripted drafting team, no one had previously set eyes on its contents. 

As Rotimi Williams, one of Nigeria's most revered legal minds, once declared, even the Constitution's preamble began with an ergregious lie, with that ritual attribution "We the People..." It is no surprise then that the Constitution bequeathed by the Nigerian military 20 years ago marked a total repudiation of the less-centralised federalist structure that was the driving principle, agreed to after tough negotiations, of prior constitutional conferences in Nigeria and Britain. Ironically, one of the proclaimed justifications for a counter-coup in July 1966 was the aim of reversing the centralization decrees that had gathered the security arms, civil service, judiciary and other state structures under one command". 

While Nigerian diarchy operates mostly in covert fashion, the military does not hesitate, when required, to declare openly where the real power lies", he concluded. The dubious constitution must be addressed by a constitutional settlement that has the will of the whole society. 

Similarly, Professor Akin Oyebode, a Constitutional law expert described Nigeria's Political System as "very dysfunctional, counter -productive. Assessing the nation's democracy since 1999, Professor Oyebode said ; "I think this is a work in progress. The question of the Nigerian political system ; it's problematic, it's an ongoing issue" He concluded that the country needs a new constitution to enable a proper and transparent democracy. He mentioned that he was among the over 400 delegates who attended the 2014 National Conference(CONFAB) organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan. According to him; "the question of the nature of the polity and what needed to be done to ameliorate its dysfunctionality resonated very loudly at the event, but nothing has yet to be done six years later.

 

He said ; "The CONFAB came up with over 600 resolutions, but nothing has been done to date to effectuate those recommendations which would have made the Nigerian polity a little bit easier to understand to enhance its functionality. If you don't want to touch the recommendations of the CONFAB, then you need another forum, not the National Assembly. The National Assembly is to make laws for the peace, order, and good governance of Nigeria; it is not a constituent assembly. It is neither the place nor the role, or function of the National Assembly to give us a constitution. The word restructuring might be problematic to some people but to most objective observers, the system we are operating is very dysfunctional and counterproductive". 

Furthermore; Dr Nina Nwodo, President General of Igbo Apex Organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo reiterated the urgent need for a new constitution that can help grow democracy in Nigeria. In his own words; "our country is operating on an illegal constitution because the constitution lacks autochtony. We never made a constitution for Nigeria, the military gave it to the country. The composition of its legislative body was chosen by a parameter not known to anybody. They wrote a constitution and abandoned the agreement our forefathers had with the British government for a regional based government, in which every region had its own security, economic development and sovereignty over its natural resources and pay tax to the central government. 

Ninety percent of the heads of security personnel in the South-East are non-indigenes. And we know all over the world that local policing is the trend today. You have to know your local territory and speak the language to the police chief. Those people don't speak the language and are not from there. They look like those posted to superintend over the colonial arrangement. This situation is threatening the very fabric of our nation." He therefore stressed that Nigeria must restructure the country and have a constitution that is autochthonous. "A constitution that is made by the people and backed by a plebiscite voted by the people" . 

No doubt it would be very difficult to have a proper and transparent democracy in Nigeria without addressing the root cause of the problem. *The Political Actors-PDP vs APC: I described PDP vs APC political parties as 'putting a lipstick on a pig, its still a pig' ,whereas the PDP tried to solve the problem by changing the question rather than addressing the root cause of the problem, the APC was a 'Mistake of Destiny', a tragic story of the supreme power of politics to destroy collective life, economy and the society. 

Rule by angry people, wrong hands, human hands, very bad tyranny; division, ethnic discrimination, exploitation and domination, terror, and economic violence, seeking to use state power to impose a particular ideology on the rest of the society. According Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo; "No Nigerian State is Safe, Secure Again. Now, no part of the country can claim to be safe from the menance and insecurity caused by terrorists, armed robbers, human traffickers, kidnappers of all sorts, cattle rustlers, insurgents, bandits and herders/farmers conflicts".

 Similarly, the UK  All -Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief has just published a report entitled 'Nigeria-Unfolding Genocide'  accusing the Federal government of inaction in protecting Christians and Ethnic minorities in Nigeria. It's a big badge of shame the country finds itself  in this situation.

 This government dramatically demonstrate how anti-democratic elements that achieve power democratically can destroy the very democracy that empowered them. Under this government, the country has fulfilled all the requirements of state failure-lawlessness, failed elections, abuse of power and attack on civil liberties, tyranny, eroding democratic institutions and checks and balances including the judiciary, collapsed economy, endangered society, this is a very bad omen and mockery of democracy.

 In another report, Ewelina U Ochab, writing for Forbes Magazine, reported that "Fulani militia continues to perpetrate mass atrocities in Nigeria's Middle-Belt and their crimes continue to go unreported. How will the Nigerian government explain the mass killings in Nigeria as recorded by several International organisations? What is the Nigerian government doing to ensure that the acts are investigated and the perpetrators prosecuted". 

A government that has refused to call the enemy by its name cannot hide from history. What is the point of democracy if it cannot guarantee citizens security and prosperity. Dr Nina Nwodo described the political parties as 'companies owned by share holders'. "Our political parties are like companies owned by shareholders where there is no freedom to choose candidates, no transparency in nomination process. you need to have a god father to win a nomination to enter any legislative houses or executive office. Our electoral system is the most corrupt in the world. This is the only country in the world where you go for an election and the adjudication of the judiciary on the outcome of an election lasts up to one year. And in the process, our judiciary is corrupt. In the process, our police men break into a polling booth and cart away polling bags and papers in broad day light. It is recorded in cameras and nobody does anything about it. 

It is very often noticed in Nigeria that people lose election and still win because their names are recorded as having won. The confidence of an average Nigerian in the electoral process is gone, to make matters worst and that is the kernel point". 

*The People-Ignorant and Impotent Majority persuaded by identity and propaganda: Freedom is not freely given by the oppressors, freedom is taken. There is a popular saying; "Your rights will not be handed to you. You're going to have to request them by going out into the streets". There is Power in Protest. Pressure works. Again, in the words of Professor Paul Collier; Our politicians would only move beyond gestures once there is a critical mass of informed citizens". 

Education is the only solution to the dilemma of democracy, all the philosophers say so and we are all stakeholders in this regard. This blog is an attempt to raise awareness to help inform and inspire people to demand change from the 'few'-wielding immeasurable wealth and power to deepen the mess we're in. At stake is whether, there will be democracy in the near future. There are several suggestions out there about the future of government in Nigeria, however, there is nothing to suggest that the government would let the peoples' voice count. 

I think It's very imperative to conclude this little piece with Professor Wole Soyinka's final conclusion on the state of democracy in Nigeria; "Nigeria is now witnessing an illusive democracy hoisted by the tyrannical regime of President Buhari. The government is worst than any military junta we have ever seen in this country. It's high time progressive Nigerians rise up and vehemently resist this despotic and macabre government. The Ekiti and Osun jungle elections are a good pointer.

 Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must protect this country and our democracy"

The Prosperity Challenge in Nigeria- Uche Okeke

 In Nigeria, wealth in natural resources has not translated into prosperity for the country and its citizens, due to 'capture, corruption and coercion'. what happens without oil remains a huge question especially as the world is seeking to de-carbonise the economy by 2050, this would mean less oil revenues for oil economies like Nigeria. Whereas the global conversation has shifted from achieving economic growth to prosperity, neither is the case currently in Nigeria, something must be done about it.

 Poor Societies stuck on the ground must learn to abandon barbaric ideas that create misery and discontent and think about 'prosperity -well-being and environment'. There are preconditions for growth especially in the modern era. Nigeria's Unitary Centralised Political System is the wrong model for success it must be overhauled to drive Social Progress. Social Progress requires new thinking not same old style.

I read a report about Britain's Supreme Court hearing Nigerian farmers and fishermen appeal to pursue claims against oil major Shell BP over spills in the Niger-Delta. According to DW Africa; The Ogale and Bille communities allege that Shell's oil operations have polluted their land and waters. They are seeking justice through British courts because cases heard in Nigeria can take decades to resolve, this should be a huge cause for concern. 

Few elites with access to wealth and power take decisions that impoverish lives and create disillusionment and disharmony in the society. In 1999 the focus was a return to civil rule, today it has to be upgraded for the 21st century by focusing on progress and economic welfare, citizens well-being, equity and justice. People everywhere can build a more hopeful and prosperous future if they embrace a better 'value system' rather than being preoccupied with 'materialism', of-course, prosperity is not 'materialism'. 

"Does everyone in the society have the basic needs of survival-food, water, shelter, safety, rights, freedom of choice". How can we improve the quality of life for all not just a few people, How can we drive inclusive growth and sustainable prosperity, How can we guarantee citizens security and prosperity, How can we build world class infrastructure and social services including education and healthcare, affordable housing for all, well paying and sustainable jobs, How can we build a prosperous and inclusive future for citizens and make sure people are not left behind should be the priority not Guardian of the society nor divine rights to rule.

 The focus should be 'flourishing and prospering'. The country must be committed to approaches that drive social progress and advance the Sustainable Development goals. How is the economy progressing? How is the society progressing? There is a huge disconnect. "Prosperity is promised, but insecurity, desperation and in-work poverty grows"-Institute for Global Prosperity(IGP). If the system is not working we need something else. 

We need to change the dysfunctional system that creates persistence of poverty and stagnation with a new model for "well-being and flourishing", something that will really address the question of the quality of peoples' lives, something that will produce societal progress. The monstrous unitary centralised political system has failed to address the question of the quality of people's lives, well-being and flourishing, today we need an alternative to guarantee a sustainable prosperity. 

We need to change the system that creates dysfunction and takes power away from people in their everyday lives."A value system that is preoccupied with possessions and the social image they project", must be abandoned. Building prosperous lives in Nigeria requires a new approach. In the words of great Einstein; "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" The present system benefits only a few, something must be done about it. 

What Works: Social Progress requires change. Change needs action. Pressure works, the question is are we ready to take action. People are not as ignorant and impotent as the politicians think if they can discover their people power and the willingness to get off the hook of "Stockholm syndrome"-identity and narratives, propaganda and ideologies that held them down. 

Wikipedia defines Stockholm Syndrome as a condition in which hostages develop a psychological alliance with their captors during captivity. 

"Our politicians would only move beyond gestures once there is a critical mass of informed citizens"-Professor Sir Paul Collier. One thing is for sure, change happens whenever we are ready. Peace and well-being, overall socio-economic well-being and stability requires a new conversation.

 Let me conclude this with a remark from the Institute for Global Prosperity; "A basic level of material consumption is needed to lead a dignified life, However, when materialism becomes a guiding principle, this rarely leads to growth in well-being, and often leads to people being less happy. If this is the case, as so much evidence suggests, it shows the need to have a new conversation about prosperity".

 I think this is the great challenge, how to achieve good life for citizens and eliminating obstacles to 'flourishing and thriving' despite wealth in natural resources in their own country. Prosperity is not just about income rather 'happiness and well-being, about quality of life and well-being in our communities, and our families and our sense of security', these are things that really matter not just elections every four years. 

We have been told that the 21st century presents a lot of challenges especially 'unprecedented' increase in human population to about 10 billion by 2050 and climate change, so "ensuring these people can thrive, not just survive, is the ultimate challenge of the 21st century"-UCL Institute For Global Prosperity. Everyone a change maker. Change Makers are needed now more than ever to help inform and inspire common action to improve lives and help save the planet. I think we are all stakeholders in this regard. 

The world has changed and we cannot afford to be left behind. The policy makers in Nigeria must key into the new global renaissance and direction on how to ensure that people "flourish in a sustainable way and lead good, productive lives". Peace and Prosperity rather than Destruction and Anarchy as we are currently witnessing-senseless killings is not the future. "Prosperity is about improving people's quality of life and their ability to flourish as individuals and communities".

 Rwanda is a shinning example despite lack of wealth in natural resources, leveraging boom in foreign direct investment to build a platform for sustainable development. In Nigeria foreign direct investment is in decline with the country's rich seeking investment havens overseas due to insecurity, fear and terror, lack of essential infrastructure and social services and hostile political climate.

Restructuring Nigeria is about a 'fairer society and a stronger economy'- Uche Okeke

"Nigeria runs expensive government, I think there is a need for a national debate on this question and there is a need for us to ensure that we are not wasting the kind of resources that we ought to use for development on overheads. At the moment, our overheads are almost seventy percent of revenues, so there is no question at all that we must reduce the size of government"-Professor Yomi Osibanjo, Nigeria's Vice-President.

 The LEAD Project Foundation has been a leading voice in advocating for the restructuring of the monstrous political structure that promotes abuse of power and persistent of poverty and stagnation in Nigeria. Our investigation of Nigeria's democracy and its crisis identifies 'capture, corruption, coercion' as the political economy problem of the country. A dubious political system, toxic political players , ignorant and impotent majority persuaded by propaganda and identity narratives. This is a tragic mix.

  No doubt, the unitary centralised political system-expensive, wasteful, dictatorial/tyrannical is the root cause of the country's sad story, a clear manifestation of how human stupidity affects society and economy. The focus was neither 'economic efficiency and social equality' rather exploitation and domination, luxury and adorenment , the licence to do as one pleases as events of recent times have clearly revealed. The truth is such idea is unsustainable and creates more harm than good. According to Wikepedia, the concept of restructuring is "the act of reorganizing the legal, ownership, operational or other structures of an entity for the purpose of making it more profitable, or better organized for its present needs" 

The aim is to reduce costs, to make better use of talent and diversity, to improve competitive advantage of the states if possible merge some states that were created for political purposes that are now unproductive and unsustainable, decrease or consolidate debt, encourage innovation and competition among the states to guarantee citizens security and freedom. The benefits of restructuring Nigeria are numerous given the experience of nearly six decades of meaningless and counter-productive unitary centralised political system. 

Restructuring Nigeria is about reviving a declining country to increase its value , reposition it for growth and make it more responsive to its challenges of improvement of overall citizens well-being. Restructuring Nigeria is about devolution of power and responsibilities to states to enable them deliver sound government including the capacity to deliver world class infrastructure and social services including education and healthcare services , job creation and overall poverty reduction. Similarly restructuring the country will help the country's diversification efforts to become effective and efficient and more successful. 

The current security challenges in the country is a constant reminder of in-effective central system seeking ethnic domination using federal power to reduce other ethnic group influence. A system where state governors are mere Chief Executives without power. In what I described as lamentations of executive Governor in Nigeria, Alhaji Masari declared that he has failed to protect his people. "I cannot look my people in the eyes, I have failed to protect them" 

Definitely, the security crisis in the country hightened by influx of foreign Fulani herdsmen who now occupy forests in various states unleashing terror, madness and mayhem despite the country's land-act laws to protect indigeneous peoples' rights and inability of the state governors to protect their citizens further highlights the urgent need for greater devolution of power and resources to states/regions. No doubt, Federal power duplicates autonomous functions, waste resources, kill independence, energy and hard work, promotes unnecessary competition at the center, sycophancy, corruption and political clientellism.

 Restructuring Nigeria is about limited government, 'cutting administrative and operational costs in response to a downturn or anticipated downturn in revenue or margins' as we are currently witnessing during the pandemic period. Restructuring Nigeria is  not about secession  as interpreted by power holders to maintain the status-quo. Restructuring Nigeria implies a major shift from the status-quo, "major change as opposed to a subtle improvement" 

The current government has plunged the country into huge and irredeemable debts that will hunt the country for a long time and there is nothing to show for it, just white elephant projects , even excluding some states in supposed investments that will involve them in the future loan repayments, so restructuring Nigeria is about limiting abuse of power, unnecessary politicisation of public policies and  limiting financial harm inflicted on the country through reckless executive power. Recently Atiku Abubabakar, the opposition PDP presidential candidate raised alarm about Nigeria's debt crisis.

 According to him; "the country cannot be rubbing its children to pay for its greed. The country cannot be on the verge of economic ruin, while still maintaining a Presidential Air fleet that has more planes than the Presidential fleets of those from the countries we take loans from. In his own words; "revelation from Nigeria's first quarter 2020 financial reports in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, shows alarmingly, that whereas Nigeria spent a total sum of N943.12 billion in debt servicing, the Federal Government's retained revenue for the same period was only N950.56 billion. This means that Nigeria's debt to revenue ratio is now 99%. He warned that the country is at  a 'precipice'. "No one should be deceived. This is a crisis! Debt servicing does not equate to debt repayment. 

The reality is that Nigeria is paying only the minimum payment to cover our interest charges, the principal remains untouched and its possibly growing. If our revenue figures do not go up, and go up quickly, Nigeria risks a situation where our revenue cannot even sustain our debt servicing obligations, meaning that we may become insolvent, and our creditors may foreclose on us, as has occurred in Sri-Lanka and the Maldives" It will be recalled that he had also written in opinion editorial of December 17 2019, titled Endless Borrowing Will Lead Nigeria to Endless Sorrowing' 

Lastly, he warned that "Nigeria is facing a crisis, and we cannot continue to keep up appearances by taking out more loans to prop up our economy. This would amount not just to robbing Peter to pay Paul, but to robbing our children to pay for our greed" It's on record that Nigerian legislators are one of the highest paid in the world receiving a monthly salary of $37,000 per month whereas the minimum wage is N30,000.00, less than $75 dollars in-addition to other executive rascalities that has created deep inequality in the society. Nigeria being a mono-economy does not need a bogus and tyrannical unitary centralised political system, people need liberty, freedom and autonomy to become more productive and competitive. 

Furthermore, Mohammad Sanusi, immediate past Emir of Kano and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria has also warned that Nigeria's governance structure is set up  for bankruptcy. According to him; "it is inevitable for Nigeria to be bankrupt with its current governance structure" He described the current structure as "too expensive and unsustainable" He has been very outspoken about the cost of governance in the country and said with the fiscal crisis the country is facing and looking at where Nigeria is headed post COVID-19 crisis, it has become imperative for Nigeria to ask fundamental questions about the structure of its federation. Speaking at a webinar hosted by Emmanuel Chapel on 'Mitigation of the Economic Impact of COVID-19 and the Path to Recovery', Sanusi said when he was the Central Bank Governor, the price of oil was over $100 per barrel, the government at the time spent Eighty-percent of its revenue on salaries and overheads. "Now I'm sure that with the shortfall in revenues and where oil prices is after debt service, we probably have to borrow to pay salaries. We have got to look at the structure" 

He stated further, "If you have a company and you have extremely high overheads and you need a high contribution margin to break even, you would be looking at how to reduce cost. So, we have a constitution that says we should have a president and a vice president, we must have a minister from every state of the federation, whether or not  it's thirty-six ministries, we should have 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives. It also said we should have thirty-six governors, thirty-six deputy governors, each state with its House of Assembly and comprising many legislators, 774 local government Chairmen, Councillors, the personal assistants and special assistants(at all levels), staff members and vehicles" 

The good thing is the current structure was a military idea that is anti-growth , seeking a militaristic empire and no longer relevant in the modern era, even before the COVID-19 exposure so it requires immediate overhaul despite unnecessary pranks and politik by the current APC government playing endless political football with the future of more than 200 million people in Nigeria. Restructuring is inescapable because the current system does not hold further promise of a better future. The unitary centralised political system is the creation of unthinking individuals obsessed with fascist ideas of the 19th century domination of one group by another.  A feudal empire seeking allegiance rather than individual liberty and freedom.

 Today is about freedom and autonomy agenda and we must embrace it. The current structure is the root of all the country's problems- division, poor leadership, weak institutions, economic violence, persistence of poverty and stagnation. It must be dismantled to address the inter-connectedness of trust, governance and growth. Adapt or perish is a well known phrase, "now as ever, is nature's inexorable imperative.

 This line addresses the fact that the world is constantly changing, requiring those who do not wish to be left behind to change along with it"-HG Wells famously wrote in 1945. Empires belonged to the past and the future is nation states. Nation states are built in equity and justice not unity and continuity regardless of inequity and injustice. A house or business built on a weak foundation will definitely fall.  A national dialogue is very important and imperative for a new constitutional settlement that will address the concept of harmonious society and help the country to flourish. 

Society is a moral phenomenon and membership of every society is defined on equity and justice which restructuring seeks to achieve. The people that share the territory will definitely decide the future they want not to be determined by a hand full of military junta. Nigeria desperately need a new constitution that has the will of the whole society on how they will be governed and decisions taken on their behalf. The truth is those who resist restructuring are the very people that need it most, unfortunately they dwell in the past driven by barbaric ideologies of the very people who keep them impoverished. The world has changed and we must adapt to the new world of freedom and autonomy. Change is happening so fast that those who hold back, even a little will be left behind as HG Wells rightly stated . "Now more than ever you must be innovative and creative to survive" 

Lastly, the current APC government has helped made restructuring very imperative as it has laid bare the gross abuse of the monstrous unitary centralised system for all to see. Restructuring is driven by a need for change. Restructuring Nigeria is a development intervention whose time has come and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Restructuring is the future and will definitely drive future politics in Nigeria. Restructuring not the next election is the answer to Nigeria's multifarious problems, even elections depend on restructuring to become successful. Infact restructuring is citizens rights.

 Restructuring Nigeria is about repositioning for citizens security and prosperity, indigenous peoples' rights, limited government and cost reduction, abuse of power and the licence to do as one pleases, economic diversification, improve competitive advantage, greater devolution of power and responsibilities, greater citizen engagement, greater economic and political rights, better citizenship and diversity, constitutional settlement or addressing the legal structure of the country we share, 'economic efficiency and social equality' , turnaround, proper and transparent democracy, sound government and stability in Nigeria. 

What can ordinary people do. They need information and awareness to demand change. This blog is an attempt to change the narrative of the political actors who benefit from the impunity of the dysfunctional system and inspire ordinary people to put pressure on the politicians to restructure the country for the betterment of our collective lives. Pressure works and democracy recognises this fundamental human rights to effect change. 

Let me conclude with some remarks from President Buhari's speech at the United Nation's General Assembly-UNGA-72; How to restructure the United Nations should be our priority number one. In his own words; "to restructure or not to restructure is no longer the question, the United Nations must be restructured to remain relevant in years to come. Several ideas are out there, all we need is to get them out together and agree on what works for the majority of the people around the world" 

My take is charity begins at home, the 2014 National Confab which has input from well constituted assembly of all the stakeholders in the Nigeria project, Nigerians from all the ethnic groups in the country , the ideas they provided should be implemented. Meanwhile restructuring was election campaign promise of the current ruling APC government, so when is the restructuring taking place.

Mobilising Finance for the Sustainable Development Goals -SDGs in Nigeria:

"The Sustainable Development Goals are a bold vision of how the whole of humanity can flourish sustainably. They are a call to break with our destructive economic habits, a universal call to action, to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity"-IGP.
 Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals needs the ability to leverage partnerships to harness widely available resources, i.e, how to systematically leverage all sources of partnerships; Public, Private and Philanthropy to fund your development projects and meet your development goals.

A) NGOs:
 NGOs are Non-Profit Organizations that operate independent of the government to solve society's problems. Their Sole Objective is Social Good. They are sometimes referred to as Civil Society Organizations and are organised on Community, National and International Levels.  They focus on Development Projects and Advocacy. However to meet their Development objectives or goals, they need Finance.

B) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 provide a shared blue print for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and for the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries-developed and developing-in a global partnership. 1. No Poverty- End Poverty in all its forms everywhere.

2.Zero Hunger- End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

4.Quality Education-Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

5.Gender Equality-Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

7.Affordable and Clean Energy-Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

12.Responsible Consumption and Production-Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

13.Climate Action-Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

14.Life Below Water-Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

15.Life on Land-Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

16. Peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, Justice for all and strong institutions, effective, accountable and inclusive at all levels.

As Non-Profit Organisations they rely on a variety of sources for funding, these include the following:

C) Sources of Finance:

Domestic Funding: 

i)Public Finance entails the role of government in funding development projects including NGOs. This includes government grants and contracts,  grants from local, state and federal agencies and other government funding. According to Investopedia; despite their independence from government, many NGOs rely heavily on government funding to function. According to funds for NGOs ; in some countries the local governments are also a major source of fundings as they have different community welfare and development schemes which NGOs can apply and raise resources and implement projects.

ii)Private Finance can be classified into two categories - the personal finance and business finance. Personal finance includes  personal money, savings accounts, family, insurance policies, consumer loans, loans from bank or financial institutions, stock market investments, retirement funds and credit cards. Business finance includes bank loans, loans from friends and relatives, investment firms, venture capitalists, hedge funds and wealthy individuals.

External Funding include International funding agencies, Philanthropy and International Corporate groups that have Corporate Social Responsibility Agenda for enhancing equity and social justice and development, Joint projects financing, partnerships, etc. 

 Additional Sources of Finance: 

Membership dues, private donations, the sale of goods and services, grants from other non-profits and charities and philanthropic foundations, private sector for-profit companies, fees for goods and services, interest from investments, loans/program related investment, tax revenues, etc. "The non-conventional resources include; the micro-enterprises, micro-finance and micro-insurance"-fundsforngos.

Applying a Maximizing Finance for Development approach to Financing Development Projects:
The focus should be on approaches that provides the right mix of Financing; Public, Private and Philanthropy, that is, Public and Private funding with the right safeguards to meet Development Goals (aligning Government, Business and Civil Society). According to the World Bank Group; "meeting the SDGs demands mean that we find solutions to crowd in all possible sources of finance, innovation and expertise". Maximizing Finance for Development will enable NGOs/organisations to systematically leverage all sources of partnerships, Public, Private and Philanthropy to fund Development Projects and meet the Sustainable Development Goals or Project Objectives.

Black lives matter in Nigeria- Uche Okeke

"Black people in Africa may not be dying as a result of racism, but far too many are dying because of their ethnicity, their political beliefs, their poverty and their gender...The Rwandan Genocide, South Africa's xenophobic uprisings, Boko-Haram's ongoing reign of terror in Nigeria are stark reminders of nameless heroes; black Africans who suffered at the hands of black Africans. They remind us that the doling out of injustice is not the preserve of white people nor is it always about race. Africans are equally complicit in ensuring that black lives don't always matter"-Morky Makura(CNN). George Floyd's killing has sparked widespread protest in the USA and around the world over police brutality and abuse, but the black lives matter protests do not reflect what is happening in Africa so it became a challenge to champion a new initiative to help raise awareness of endless atrocities that is rampant in Nigeria and other African countries as we believe that every life matters in a fair and just world. Today we have the tools to help fight injustice everywhere. In Nigeria , rape, ethnic discrimination, police brutality and extra-judicial killings and violent crimes including genocide is everyday experience, yet no one talks about it and the world remain silent. Amnesty International Nigeria spokesperson , Osai Ojigho told CNN; "No matter where you are in Nigeria, in the North or South, in the city or rural, Christian or Muslim, every woman and girl is at risk of rape. Nowhere is safe or immune to this violent crime against women" She called on the government to declare a "national crisis" on rape following a recent spate of violence involving young women in the country. According to Baroness Cox, the Founder of Humanitarian Trust Aid Relief Trust, UK; "It's been five years since Nigeria's Islamist Fulani herdsmen insurgency began in Nigeria. Thousands of civilians have been killed, hundreds of churches have been burned to rubble, entire communities have been forced to abandon their homes and farmland. Across Northern and Central Middle-Belt states, militant herdsmen continue to engage in aggressive and strategic land-grabbing policy. They seek to replace diversity and difference with an Islamic ideology similar to Boko-Haram's which is imposed with violence on those who refuse to comply. It is according to the Nigerian House of Representatives-"Genocide". The Governor of Benue State, one of the target Nigerian states in the Middle Belt, where the herdsmen insurgency is worst hit with sad tales of  loss of human lives and properties, Governor Samuel Ortom confirmed, Baroness Cox's findings in this regard. In his own words; "The point is that they have vowed to take over this land , and they have not hidden it. I want the whole world to know that these are expansionist agents, it is not about rearing cattle, but about taking over our land. That is their plan and I have always said it and they have not denied that". He has called on the Federal Government to make deliberate effort to disarm the killer herdsmen. Sadly the Nigeria government is unable to disarm them and relunctant to embrace modern cattle rearing practices, preferring to to treat the killer herdsmen with carrot rather than prosecution and accountability. The government's favourable solution is establishing cattle colony in all the states in the country which contradicts the country's land act laws that protects indigenous peoples' rights. Furthermore, Arch-Bishop Dr Obinna, Catholic Bishop of Owerri, Imo state, recently, raised alarm about impending 'genocide' given  the sudden influx of foreign Fulani herdsmen in the South-East Nigeria, despite inter-state lock-down for covid-19. South-Eastern Nigeria is a former BIAFRA entity for the Igbo ethnic tribe that lost more than three-million citizens during the tragic Nigeria-Biafra civil war in 1967-70. So the influx of the herdsmen described as the world's fourth deadliest terrorist organisation in the South-East with different culture and religion is a very bad omen. They live in the forests rather than communities, using their cattles to destroy farmlands, rape, main and kill local people and sack communities who oppose their destructive activities. People are killed on a daily basis and videos circulating various Social Media sites showing atrocities of the herdsmen that is unchallenged, no arrests, no prosecution.  In his words, "not satisfied with defeating us in an even war, there is this threat to wipe out the Igbos and take over our God-given homes and lands". Abductions, suicide bombings , killings and attacks on civilians by Boko-Haram has persisted.  A recent Human Rights Watch World Report 2019  says, "Nigeria which currently sits on the UN Human Rights Council , in July abstained from voting on a resolution on the human rights situation in Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Burundi; and another resolution urging states to respect and protect basic human rights and civil society. In November, under the HRC's Universal Periodic Review mechanism, states made 290 recommendations to Nigeria, including to combat all forms of discrimination, especially against women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex persons,combat impunity and abolish death penalty. The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court continued its preliminary examination into the situation in Nigeria, with a focus on alleged international crimes committed in the Niger-Delta, the Middle Belt states and in the Boko-Haram conflict. The preliminary examination also focuses on the status of national proceedings regarding these crimes..., In August 2019, President Buhari delivered the keynote address at the 20th Anniversary of the ICC's Rome Statute event at The Hague and used the opportunity to mark Nigeria's strong support for the ICC's mandate". Black Lives Matter in Nigeria is a Non-Profit, Non-Political, Non-Religious, Non-Violent Organisation that seeks to leverage global partnerships for Social Action against Injustice, Racism, Rape, Police Brutality and Extra-Judicial Killings, Genocide, etc. We believe that All Lives Matter Every Where. No Social Justice, No Peace. We encourage people to become active members, support us and help promote our work, Together we make change happen. We didn't have telecommunications in that time, we didn't have social media, we didn't have the right to vote" Ofcourse, today we have internet and broadband, telecommunications, almighty social media, we have the right to vote definitely we have the right to effect change and we can. Its good that people no longer accept what they accepted before, so ask yourself what are am I doing about racial, ethnic inequality, rape, police brutality and abuse, killings, genocide and other violent crimes. Remember Change starts with me. Social Justice and Social Change requires action and practice not political rhetorics. Society's problems need you so get involved, lets make change happen. Black Lives don't just matter in the streets of Europe and America, Charity starts at home. The words of Lela Gilbert, Senior Fellow For Religious Freedom at Family Research Council and Hudson Institute's Centre For Religious Freedom is a constant reminder to take action and demand change. In her own words; "while round-the-clock global media reports focus on the shartered streets of New York, Minneapolis and beyond, atrocious violence against black women, children and men is surging in Nigeria and we hardly hear a word about it" We can help change the way things are. Nigeria: Five years of the Buhari Administration

Nigeria moves closer to becoming a failed state-"The clouds are darkening over Nigeria...,the situation in Africa's most populous country is unravelling and its President of five years appears to be making things worse"-Ayo Adedoyin, The Telegraph.

Economy, Security, Corruption, Democracy and Human Rights, Rule of law, Poverty Reduction, Unemployment, Diversity and Collective life, etc. Follow our analysis of the Socio-economic and political developments and the future of politics in Nigeria as we continue to research the answers to the questions that really matter to make a difference in the world. The status-quo is a disservice to Nigeria and no longer relevant in the modern era unfortunately the political actors don't seem to understand this reality despite nearly six decades of  failed experimentation. Its a tragedy that people seek to solve problems by changing the question rather than answering it as we have seen in the failure of Buhari government in addressing structural deficits that is the root cause of the problem. Evidence suggests that the current political system-'expensive, wasteful, dictatorial' , is long overdue for restructuring as virtually all the country's socio-economic and political challenges is centred on the dysfunctional political system-'trust, governance, growth' . No doubt a dubious political system undermines effective government, it requires a genuine leadership to be bold to restructure it and enlightened and organised majority that will rise above identity and narratives of the crooks who created the mess for their own political gains. The government endorses itself but everyone knows that the reality is different as the country has become a ghetto of misery and discontent with kidnapping and killings in various communuities on the increase on a daily basis and the government seems helpless in this regard. The events of coronavirus pandemic has confirmed the fears of many about the curse of oil in Nigeria- 'mono-economy, coercion, capture and corruption' and provides the right opportunity for restructuring to take place. The Buhari administration has three more years to re-write history and save the country from total collapse by restructuring the country for a stakeholder society that will  facilitate competition and guarantee the desire growth because there is no development without trust, peace and harmony. Equity and Justice is the super glue that holds the society together not unity and continuity. Growth requires new thinking not same old style. The saying, adapt or perish is always very true. Note: Borrowing to fund a bogus political structure-'expensive, wasteful, dictatorial', the licence to do as one pleases-'security votes, abnormal salaries, education and medical tourism, religious pilgrimage, the next election'. The toxic mindset of 97%/5% public services  is ''morally irresponsible, the worst form of corruption'', and will sink the dysfunctional system further and expose it to greater ridicule in the future when this government is long gone. Nigeria is ranked the 14th most fragile state in the world and 9th in Africa. The fragile state index formerly known as the failed states index is an annual report published by the US think-tank, the Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy Magazine which ranks 178 countries across twelve indicators of the risks and vulnerabilites faced by individual nations. Nigeria Political Actors vs The Majority. Another interesting analysis that lends support to the urgent need for the restructuring of the monstrous political structure that deepens injustice and inequality in Nigeria, the licence to do as one pleases. Unfortunately ordinary people have been socialised to believe that the reason for persistence of poverty and stagnation in Nigeria is PDPvsAPC, also that restructuring could mean division into sub-nations. These are false narratives of the gods and monsters among us who created the mess we're in just to maintain and sustain the status-quo. The political actors who simply benefit from the impunity of the dysfunction persuade ordinary people with Propaganda and Ideology to continue business as usual. Nigeria is a case study where wealth in natural resources turned out to be a curse rather than a blessing, elite capture, coercion , corruption and violence. This ruthlessness and recklessness should be overhauled to enable proper investment in the future of the country. I read a report about the budget for the legislators which is twice the budget for national infrastructure and social services including education and healthcare. The political system that unites the few political actors against the majority is the problem not the solution. Ordinary people should become enlightened and awakened and put more pressure on the politicians to restructure the country for inclusiveness. The lesson of Covid-19 is invest in all and prosper or perish in continuing human stupidity created by unreasoning individuals only interested in selfish power grabs for their families, friends and associates. The political system is broken , exposed as fake. Growth requires new thinking not same old style. Ordinary people need to wake up to be on the right side rather than remaining endless tool for violence by the same politicians who don't mean well for the nation. Truly, political systems determine a country's economic future. The time has come to reject ideology and politics of the gods and monsters among us that create discrimination,domination, exploitation, inequality, injustice, persistence of poverty and stagnation. Toxic ideology and politics affects everyday life and does not lead to the desired freedom rather misery and discontent, that's the whole point. The truth is the politicians see the majority as ignorant, impotent and powerless to demand change. In the words of Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa state; "members of the elites are united in preserving their advantages over the masses irrespective of their differences of tribe and religion.., we have taken away from them their dignity, their self-esteem, their pride and self-worth so that they cannot even organise. Up there , we elite unite, we will never allow Nigeria to break because once it breaks, we will lose. But the common man loses nothing. What is he losing? He is already in hell, he cannot lose anything more than his hell" If the political elites are united in exploitation and domination, i wonder why ordinary people cannot be united against oppression to free themselves from perpetual chains. Freedom is taken not freely given and today's democratic culture can enable freedom. The essence of democracy is to guarantee citizens security and prosperity and participation in democracy should not be limited to voting only. Its embarrasing that the current APC government is still playing political football with the essential restructuring of the political system prefering to concentrate on the symptoms of the problem rather than the root cause. The current political structure is unsuitable and unsustainable, soon the people would be forced to decide for themselves if the APC government is a blessing or a curse. A country described as the poverty capital of the world is paying Senators $37,000.00 per month as salaries, whereas the minimum wage is less than $75.00 and the majority of the citizens are unemployed, pensions not paid. In the words of Paul Nwaogu; "the jumbo salary and the expensive nature of the presidential system will be on trial soon since the mono-economy of oil is no longer sustainable. We hope a remedy will be found sooner not later. It seems the period of Babariga is almost over" Political and Economic restructuring is long overdue in Nigeria, no doubt another opportunity is here to do the needful. Nigeria: The Pending Almajiri Burn Fire

"Powerful politicians in Northern Nigeria are pushing for the scrapping of controversial Koranic schools after some pupils found themselves at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak. No- one knows how many of the children known in the local Hausa language as almajirai, which is derived from the Arabic word al-Muhajirun, or emigrant were sent home but Kaduna state alone said it had repatriated thirty-thousand (30,000). What no-one knew was that hundreds of the children already had coronavirus, so officials had inadvertently contributed to spreading the virus rather than containing it. They saw the pandemic as an opportunity to scrap the almajirai-based Koranic schools that have long been part of the Islamic education system in the mainly Muslim North"- Nduka Orjinmo. The North in its relentless desire for power grab and keep power by all means unwittingly cut its nose to spite its face. The Northern leaders never really asked themselves the purpose and reason for which they pursue power desperately. At least if not for public good then it should be for selfish reasons. All outcomes through the years they have held power points to the theory of selfish interest. Ok, so we isolate self interest as the only reason Northern leaders desperately seek and grab power. Going deeper to fundamental forensic expose into the selfish interest of the Northern leaders reveal a deeper layer of the meaning of selfish interest i.e, my family and I alone. These people have trained their minds to think of themselves and immediate families only hence they have mastered the art of turning a blind eye to the basic needs of the lowly Northerners especially their millions of children. These Northern leaders have long used grabbed power to allocate choice federal government positions and military power to their Northern kind. By so doing they have amassed wealth to the tones at the detriment of the oil producing communities whose land has been ruined by ruthless people that want the eggs not caring what became of the goose. Apart from using federal might to pilfer Southern oil revenue they also systematically frustrated the employment of educated Southern youths. Rather than employing educated South with vital skills for good resource management , they prefer near illiterate Northerners in every sphere of the federal government offices. Dejected and frustrated Southerners learnt the power education and pursued education at all levels competitively and meritoriously. Entry qualifications for University was not reduced to two O-levels grade at best but generally just bear ethnic Northern and religious name and you are admitted into Universities where they graduate half baked graduates that is unleashed on the Nigerian psyche. They produce nothing and contribute nothing, whereas Southerners have since learnt to fend for themselves through mass migration to civilised economies and diligent self employment. It is not yet uhuru in Southern Nigeria, but there is significant growth economically compared to the pampered North that has nothing to show. Indeed Southern Nigeria diaspora remit about $29.9billion dollars to the Southern economy yearly which greatly galvanise the local economy. In my two decades living in Europe, I have hardly encountered a Northern Hausa/Fulani man living and working here. No, they cannot come here because they are generally unemployable where there is regard for merit and qualifications and no ethno-religious entitlement. So where am I going with the above expose. The selfish misuse of power and religion by the Northern elites. With their donkey years held on power and control of resources, they have dangerously refused to educate or skill their sons and daughters. Rather the girls are married off at the age of twelve to idle unemployed men to litter the harem with innocent children whose future is quickly reduced while the boys are thrown to the streets from age eight to fend for themselves exposed to the vagaries of unsupervised childhood. The disparity between a Southern child/youth and Northern youth is 20:1. Whereas the average Southern youth can question reckless authority and speak the truth to power, the Northern youth is muted due to lack of education or skillful empowerment hence are easily manipulated by politicians and their religious captains for thuggery and banditry. However, it has become clearly lately that the numbers of these almajiris have risen to the millions and no longer containable by their selfish masters and are becoming restive, a dangerous nuisance to the North. It's this realization that caused the Northern Governors forum to agree that almajiris should be repatriated to their states of origin as an emergency measure to curtail their menance. We can see this happening now in the North and simultaneously these almajiris are now being massively smuggled in their thousands into Southern territories under the watch of our idiotic Southern leaders and Governors who are only concerned with their perfidious looting. Under their watch these dangerous angry hungry unskilled and uneducated lot are being smuggled into Southern territories to do what? As Asari Dokubo recently warned, the burn fire is upon us in the South and we must wake up from our slumber before we all get engulfed in it. The pending Almajirin burn fire has now progressed from the clandestine to the brazen. There is something sinister in the offing. The rabbit does not run about in the day for nothing. Every Southern community must wake up and set up vigilante groups at their respective borders to check those who come in and why they are coming in such large numbers. These are foot soldiers in advance deployed under a decoy. As happened in Benue state, very soon helicopters would be sighted dropping arms for them in the cover of night. The Southern court jesters in this administration who  are only useful for foolish errand must now count their tongue otherwise they and their families too would not be spared by this Almajirin burn fire that is nigh. Nigeria's unitary centralised political system is distasteful, development trap

The concept of harmonious society goes beyond the map, no map can show everything. Progressive societies are built on liberal traditions of freedom and autonomy to guarantee progress and development through competition, poor societies are still stuck in barbaric ideas and ideology that keep them permanently in the primitive state. Political system determines everything.  The political system determines growth and harmony in a society. Ethnic diverse society like Nigeria does not need a unitary centralised system as the experience of nearly six decades have shown. The  monstrous unitary centralised political system in Nigeria has failed to deliver its promise of prosperity and harmony, rather deepens autocracy and its ugly tyrannical features; discrimination, division, profound racism, fear and terror, poor resource management, corruption, gross human rights abuse, gerrymandering, police state, fear and terror, killings, political bias and favouritism, ethnic exploitation and domination, economic violence and distress, genocidal thrust, totalitarian barbarism, inequity and injustice, lack of accountability and transparency, etc, so  it must be overhauled to address the interconnectedness of trust, governance and growth.  The current APC led government in Nigeria has finally exposed its gross flaws and abuse for everyone to see. The lesson of Covid-19 has reinforced the need for its overhaul, application of reason and rationality rather than unity and continuity regardless of inequity and injustice. The ideology and politics of the status-quo is toxic and destructive and cannot guarantee the desired freedom. Restructuring the monstrous political system-'expensive, wasteful, dictatorial' is one sure way to guarantee citizens security and freedom by unbundling the dictatorial powers of the centre to empower the states/regions with more resources to become  independent and competitive, innovative, productive and attain the desired growth as envisioned by the fore fathers who were reasoning individuals as against the idea and ideology of the gods and monsters among us who created the mess we're in.  The current system is not working and creates just misery and discontent, its as simple as that and its pointless sinking with it. A dubious political system undermines effective government by promoting the wrong leadership and wrong institutions. According to Senator Ike Ekweremadu; " judgement day would come upon the nation unless it overhauls the military-imposed feeding bottle federalism to enthrone a political system predicated on self-reliance, hard work, enterprise and resourcefulness to catalyse development" No doubt, True Federalism/Fiscal Federalism is the only solution to the current ram-shackle unitary centralised system that has brought the country to its knees. Ordinary people in Nigeria are reduced to the impotent role of passive observer.  According to Professor Mattew Humphrey, University of Nottingham; "who can only sit and watch what their fate will be. Soccer fans who watch their team at home, shouting and jumping from their seats in a superstitious belief that this will somehow influence the outcome". They are persuaded with political propaganda and ideology and some made to believe that restructuring means seccession or dividing the country into sub-group identities, whereas ordinary people would be the major beneficiaries. Restructuring also mean abolishing Senators salaries of $37000.00 per month whereas the minimum wage is less than $75.00 per month. National Assembly budget is more that the budget for Social services including education and healthcare put together. Lamido Sule, a former Governor of Jigawa state in Nigeria was quoted recently as saying ; "Nigeria is too weak to break...,Nigeria cannot break up because members of the elites are united in preserving their advantages over the masses irrespective of their differences of tribe and religion" In his own words; "who will break it? The ordinary person in Jigawa or the ordinary person in Sokoto or ordinary person in Bayelsa? Is it the Igbo vulcaniser or the Yoruba woman selling kerosene by the poverty. We have taken away from them their dignity, their self-esteem, their pride and self-worth so that they cannot even organise. Up there, we (elite) unite, we will never allow Nigeria to break because once it breaks, we will lose. But the common man  loses nothing. What is he losing? He is already in hell; he cannot lose anything more than this hell"  However, Jerry John Rawlings, Former Head of State and President of Ghana has said that "Nigerians are still in love with their oppressors"  What Can ordinary people do? Pressure works, put more pressure on the politicians to do the right thing, overhaul the monstrous political system that promotes abuse of power, the licence to do as one pleases and deepens persistence of poverty and stagnation. Everyone wins if the politicians do the right thing. People are not as impotent and ignorant as the power holders think. In the words of Professor Sir Paul Collier, Oxford University; "Our politicians would only move beyond gestures once there is a critical mass of informed citizens, so citizens have to get sufficiently informed so that they can get on the right side. The crooks, the powerful will be putting out narratives that try to misinform and so its the business of ordinary people to get properly informed". The unitary centralised system is the biggest blockage to growth in Nigeria, the focus should be how to restructure it not unnecessary distractions. Growth requires new mindset, new thinking not same old style. Endless political football of the much desired restructuring will bring more misery and discontent and there will be no hiding place. The bogus, wasteful and dictatorial system must be dismantled to guarantee citizens security and prosperity not just looking at shortermism, the symptoms but not the root cause of the problem, now is the time. What's the point of being stuck in a political system that cannot protect lives and property and creates persistence of poverty due to human stupidity of using conquering techniques to diminish citizens potentials and deepen ethnic exploitation and domination. So sad that the world has moved away from the primitive and barbaric ideas of connquest and domination, poor societies are trapped in it. The unitary centralised political system has failed to generate the conditions for growth, continuing with it will create more harm than good, as we are currently witnessing, the time has come to dismantle it. The current debt ridden government in Nigeria needs more pressure in this regard to save the country from imminent danger and collapse. The status-quo is unsuitable and unsustainable and demonstrates a clear and present danger ahead. My inescapable conclusion is , the political system is dysfunctional, the time has come to dismantle it. Constitutional settlement is the revolutionary change people need not just unity and continuity regardless of inequity and injustice. Freedom and autonomy agenda, anything else is distraction.

Almajiri is a barbaric idea that mocks and abuse children in Nigeria, it must be abolished

Northern Governors have resolved to stamp out Almajiri"-Governor El-Rufai. Similarly, Dr Junaid Muhammad has this to say: "I don't believe the almajiri is necessary, I don't believe it is politics or religion, I don't believe it is in the interest of our country to allow this unhealthy phenomenon. It is economically counterproductive, it does not help in developing the country or developing the young men who are the Almajerai"

In changing times, toxic ideology and politics must be replaced with reason and rationality. Almajiri in Nigeria calls for caution and greater responsibility on the parts of parents, and state governments beyond ideology and politics or religion. Almajiri is a big social risk, a threat to public health, safety and security. The risk of encouraging their inter-state migration would be irredeemable. It's a big badge of shame that politicians of the by-gone age are politicising this decades of moral hazard, dismal failure of duty of care and responsibility for unimaginable purposes rather than seeking to abolish this barbaric abuse and shameful practice of exploitation of innocent children for nefarious purposes, despite collecting federal resources on their behalf. These children are breeding grounds for various social ills and security risks not pointless political and religious point scoring views that only expose well intentioned ruthlessness and recklessness. What happened to the numerous schools built by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for the education of these street children. This is unnecesary politik of human stupidity which mock and abuse the children. Politicians use the children to inflate census figures to attract more federal allocations, use them to rig elections by registering them as underage voters, collect universal basic education and federal social school feeding grants, Internal Displaced Citizens grants, even Covid-19 grants and other federal palliative assistance funds, etc, yet they dump them in the streets and facilitate their illegal migration to various states especially in this pandemic period. Meanwhile their own children attend some of the world's best schools. I think they should be deported to their various states to enjoy the education and social services already provided on their behalf. The politicians and religious leaders should be ashamed of this immorality, failure of basic duty of care and responsibility. In changing times barbaric ideas and  practices are abolished and people become more responsible. Kaduna state is doing a great job in this regard. According to Governor El-Rufai, "his administration is reviewing state laws to ensure the system remained dead, and parents of almajiri were being educated to take up their responsibilities and send their children to school", this is very commendable. Birth control is one sure area that is very important in eradicating this henious practice. Toxic ideology and politics should not replace reason and rationality .We should not hide under the cloak of citizens rights to lose sight of political accountability, public safety and security. Almajiri calls for greater education and responsibility on the part of parents, state governments beyond politics. There is urgent need to invest in those children even when most of these states are in dire need of vital skills. Migration should seek to add value not endanger lives especially during this historic scourge of global pandemic that is ravaging countries leaving heavy tolls of human deaths. States should be firm in enforcing the iinter-state lockdowns to save lives. Its akin to the senseless killings of innocent people in various states despite land act laws and there is no accountability. Indeed, the time has come to replace certain ideology and politics of the 'gods and monsters' among us who don't mean well for the society. Again, citizenship should place responsibility on human behaviour not promoting barbarity and lawlessness that bring misery and discontent. The media and civil society must be vigilant and play their roles in this regard. Everyone wins if we do the right thing. Save lives, Protect the country! This pandemic is a great opportunity to think different, do things different and create a whole new society that will work for everyone. I learnt the Senate is seeking the revival of Almajiri schools built by former President Goodluck Jonathan to facilitate the integration of these children into modern education system in the country, this requires the fierce urgency of now, my view.

The lessons of Hitler and the Nazi Party is creating a whole new society that would never let anything like fascism and world war happen again. I have chosen to use this blog post to share my little understanding on how Propaganda and Ideology affects Everyday Life, how tyrants use Ideology and Propaganda to unleash terror and devastate humankind. According to Professor Michael Freeden, "Propaganda persuades us to adopt political beliefs or behaviours that we would not normally embrace" Some of the activities of the Nazi party is replicated in most poor societies despite warning from history. Do you think Ideology and Politics can guarantee freedom. The Nazi also promised abundant society in which the poor would pertake of the riches once enjoyed by the elites, but the result was totalitarian barbarism, terror, profound racism, economic distress and violence, genocidal thrust, war and disaster. The Jews were ostracised and accused of engaging in unfair competition, strangled commercial opportunities and slaughtered. Propaganda and Ideology can be used by Ideological actor to unleash terror and advance a hidden agenda, its left to ordinary people to find out if some ideology lead to doom or boom and real freedom and do something about it. Today, Propaganda is not just tied to authoritarian regimes and technology now enables it. Fear and Terror, profound racism, injustice, oppression are anti progress and development, it should be resisted. The result is misery and discontent. The good news is Western democracy and human rights offers the greatest opportunity for freedom and liberty. In the words of Professor Mat Humphrey; "democracy is a bind for dictators that they cannot escape" People must seek freedom from oppression and the state must guarantee freedom not abuse it. People need to be enlightened and awakened. Everyone a change maker. May God deliver us from the scourge of our time. In the words of Nicola Mandelson, Facebook's VP for Europe, the Middle East and Africa: "We are living through an unprecedented time when it has never been more important to stay connected and stop misinformation and harmful content. People are doing extraordinary things to keep us together. Social connection isn't the cure that will rid us of coronavirus but it will certainly be key in helping us through this" This challenging times offers the greatest opportunity for social change. It's possible to achieve a harmonious society.

Igbo President in Nigeria is a human right especially in a democracy- Uche Okeke.

People tend to run to their various ethnic groups/identity if their safety, economic and political rights are no longer guaranteed in their union, this can be avoided by constitutional settlement"-Uche Okeke. Society is more than just an idea of few individuals, the 'gods and monsters' among us, with the capacity to control or determine the lives of individuals.  According to Emily Durkheim; "Society is a moral phenomenon and defined on the basis of its membership" . The concept of a harmonious society goes beyond the map, propaganda and ideology rather equity and social justice. Within a secularised society where reason is highly valued, Igbo President is a right not a benevolent idea. Ohaneze should focus on how to dismantle the monstrous political structure that makes them begging for the position of the president in their own country. Presidency is a right not a benevolent idea in your own country. Those who share the same territory must have a rational constitution that guarantees the political and economic rights of its components, equality and freedom. The truth is, this is not meant to be just Igbo struggle, rather a collective responsibility by the various component units of the society to dismantle the status-quo and its divide-and-rule strategy that has only made a particular homogeneous group the beneficiary of power politics and opportunities in Nigeria and preventing people from looking into the ways in which institutions and practices may be counterproductive and need changing.  After-all, Politics is about identity and allocation of resources. One sure way this can happen is by reviving the legacy of regional political parties to check the excesses of the centre. A harmonious society does not need a dubious constitution to prosper and flourish rather equity and justice is the over-riding objective not unity and continuity.  Modernity is about new thinking, moving beyond the  nineteenth-century ideas of exploitation and political domination of one group by another,  discrimination and conflict, but  new approaches, new perspectives, shared values and shared interests. The time has come to abolish obsolete ideas and parochial conceptions that are doomed to failure. The new age is about application of reason to all areas of human experience to achieve human liberation and harmony. The world has changed beyond the imaginings of the ruthless 'few' who were not interested in emancipation of humankind. Without a new constitution, social change will be very difficult and human life would continue in its miseries. The restructuring of the monstrous political structure that creates abuse of power and deepens distrust is the only way forward. The APC government promised restructuring since 2015, people are still waiting for it. No doubt, there will always be days of reckoning and political accountability. Constitutional settlement is the revolutionary change that Nigeria needs. One Nigeria as ideological myth threatens peaceful co-existence and undermines progress and development. Inequity and injustice tears up nations into several sub-nations, this can be avoided. Note: The concept of harmonious society is about equity and justice not false unity and continuity regardless of the inequity and injustice current arrangements might involve, that's the ideology of the gods and monsters among us using propaganda to persuade people to adopt. Restructuring requires effective leadership and collective action to put pressure on the political leaders to do the right thing. This requires enlightenment and  action and we are all stakeholders. Reason and rationality must replace toxic ideas and ideologies that affect values, society's harmony, progress and development. Politics should place responsibility on human behaviour to promote peaceful co-existence, equality and freedom not lawlessness, recklessness and ruthlessness. Unity and continuity regardless of inequity and injustice is shorter-lived, unfortunately this is a hard lesson to learn. Political values such as freedom, equality and justice help societies stick together and constitutional settlement is the glue. Igbo President becomes a reality with restructuring, not begging the gods and monsters among us, the very people that created the mess we're in . There must be a commitment to make it happen, now is the time, not the next election. Democracy offers the greatest opportunity to actualise Igbo President as a human right using non-violent tactics and strategies which are fully compatible with the Western ideology of democracy and human rights, democracy is a bind for dictators that they cannot escape.
